District details

Anderson, a Republican, is a marketing consultant. He spent 10 years on active duty with the U.S. Air Force.

Fredrickson, a Democrat, is a clinical social worker and adjunct professor.

Anderson is endorsed by U.S. Rep. Don Bacon and the Douglas County Republican Party. Fredrickson is endorsed by the Nebraska State Education Association, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Nebraska and more groups. See all of them on his campaign website.

On the issues

Anderson said his running for the Legislature is underscored by his commitment to “God, Country and Family.” He said increased political awareness throughout his life gave him a conviction toward public service that his experience can contribute to. Fredrickson said he’s running again to continue putting the experience he gained in his first term to work, filling a gap in the Legislature as someone with mental health expertise.

Anderson said property tax relief is the top issue affecting District 20. He said Nebraska needs a hard cap on property taxes as well as a clearly set plan that addresses the root cause of the issue. Frederickson said district constituents want strong economic development, expanded access to opportunity and an affordable state.

Frederickson said the state’s tax structure should be modernized. He said he supports policy that provides property tax relief — such as expanding the homestead exemption — over shifting tax increases to different areas. Anderson said he supports Gov. Jim Pillen’s efforts to relieve property taxes by raising sales taxes. He said the Legislature should monitor and cap local spending as a means of creating tax relief.

Voters should be able to receive paid sick leave benefits outlined in the approved ballot measure, Anderson said. He did not mention the voter-approved ballot measure on the state’s minimum wage, and said ballot measures could create economic challenges for small business owners. Frederickson said the outcome of an election reflects the will of the voters, so ballot measures should be enacted as closely as possible to the measure they voted for.

Frederickson said there should be transparency around the building of data centers and their environmental costs. He said the state should collect more data on the impact they could have on ratepayers and the state’s water supply before investing in them fully. The Legislature should examine the ideal placements of data centers in the state, Anderson said. He said the state should ensure they don’t have negative impacts on Nebraska agriculture or the environment and be placed in areas where they drive economic growth.

If elected, Anderson said he would look to create more efficiencies in government and increase tourism revenue in the state to address Nebraska’s budget deficit. The Legislature needs to be honest about the driver of the state’s budget deficit, Frederickson said. He said the state should review tax exemptions that no longer serve a purpose while protecting the state’s core services.

The Legislature should build a Nebraska that people choose to live in, Frederickson said. He said lawmakers should be voting on policies that benefit the state’s economic opportunity and quality of life. Anderson said the state should lower property taxes and better advertise why people should live in Nebraska when trying to address brain drain.
