Forty-seven states now allow for the use of cannabis for medical reasons. Nebraska is not one of them.

That will change if the backers of two ballot measures get their way.

Initiative 437 would let doctors recommend the use of medical cannabis, commonly referred to as medicinal marijuana, and would provide protections for patients and caregivers. Initiative 438 would create a commission to regulate the private industry to provide medical cannabis to patients.

Medical marijuana in Nebraska has for years been derailed before getting to a vote of the people.

The effort has garnered support from organizations like Nebraska Families 4 Medical Cannabis, Growing the Good Life, Teamsters Local 554, individuals and a few out-of-state sources.

Supporters say medical marijuana is a crucial tool for people facing chronic illness and could bring in new tax revenue. Opponents in the past have argued that the FDA should regulate marijuana and this would represent a slippery slope to broad legalization.

Vote “For” on both if you support legalization of medical cannabis. Vote “Against” if you want it to remain illegal.
