1-minute overview
What your vote means
If this passes, it would change state law to give most workers at Nebraska businesses the right to paid sick time. They could use that time if they or a family member needs time off for health reasons.
Workers at small businesses could earn up to 40 hours of sick time a year. People who work for bigger businesses could get up to 56 hours a year.
Nebraska workers currently have no right to paid time off if they’re sick, though many companies provide it anyway. If a company already has a policy, this wouldn’t necessarily replace it. It acts as a floor of what’s required.
The law would also include details around the new requirements – like how sick time can be used, documentation requirements and language preventing retaliation against employees who use sick time.
This ballot measure is largely funded by Washington, D.C.-based 1630 fund, Open Society Policy Center and The Fairness Project, as well as Nebraska Appleseed. Other local organizations also support the effort, like the Women’s Fund of Omaha and the ACLU of Nebraska.
Vote “For” this ballot measure if you want state law to require employers in Nebraska to give their employees paid sick leave. Vote “Against” if you want to leave the situation as it is now.
